IOC celebrates six winners at 2012 Women and Sport Awards
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Thursday honoured five women and one organisation for their outstanding contributions to the development of women’s participation in sport and sports administration during a ceremony for the 2012 IOC Women and Sport Awards in Los Angeles.
Presented on the opening night of the 5th World Conference on Women and Sport, the trophies were awarded to one global and five continental winners selected by the IOC Women and Sport Commission from a pool of 52 nominees. The applicants were submitted by National Olympic Committees (NOCs), Continental Associations and International Federations.
India’s Manisha Malhotra was presented with the World Trophy for her commitment to helping disadvantaged girls progress through sport. Following a professional tennis career that saw her compete in the 2000 Olympic Games, Malhotra started offering women support in a range of sports, including archery, wrestling, boxing, badminton, athletics, squash and shooting. She travels all over India – visiting some of the country’s most remote areas – to find talented individuals among the socio-economically deprived.
As Chair of the Sports Committee of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India, Malhotra has also worked tirelessly to promote female leaders in all aspects of sport in the economic sector.

“As a former Olympian, Ms Malhotra knows how important a tool sport can be in the lives of young women,” said IOC President Jacques Rogge, who was on hand to present the trophy to Malhotra. “Ms Malhotra has been, and continues to be, an inspiration to everyone she meets. I applaud her and all of tonight’s winners for everything they have done to help improve the lives of women around the world.”
The five continental trophies were awarded as follows:
- IOC Trophy for Africa: Peninnah Aligawesa Kabenge (Uganda)
- IOC Trophy for the Americas: the Bradesco Sports and Education Progamme and Centre (Brazil)
- IOC Trophy for Asia: Zaiton Othman (Malaysia)
- IOC Trophy for Europe: Aikaterini Nafplioti-Panagopoulos (Greece)
- IOC Trophy for Oceania:  Roseline Blake (Cook Islands)

2020 Cities submit Application Files to IOC
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is very pleased to announce that by the deadline of 15 February 2012, the cities of  Istanbul (Turkey), Tokyo (Japan), Baku (Azerbaijan), Doha (Qatar) and Madrid (Spain)* submitted their Application Files to host the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in 2020.
The Application File provides the IOC with an overview of each City’s project and is the key element in Phase 1 of the bidding procedure.
These files will now be studied by an IOC-appointed working group and a report made to the IOC Executive Board (EB). At its meeting in May in Quebec City, the EB will decide which cities will be accepted as Candidate Cities and proceed to phase 2 of the IOC’s bid process. Following its decision, the Working Group’s report will be published on the IOC web site.
If they so wish, Applicant Cities may make their responses public and post them on their web sites as of today.
The election of the host city will take place on 7 September 2013 at the IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

* Cities are listed in the order of drawing of lots
Note to editors:The two bid phases (Applicant and Candidate) were introduced by the IOC in 2000 to ensure that cities insufficiently prepared or considered not to have the potential to successfully organise the Olympic Games in the year in question, did not proceed to the second phase of bidding, thus ensuring significant cost savings both to the bid cities and the IOC.
As part of its mission to continually monitor and improve the bid process, the IOC recently brought forward some technical matters and questions regarding existing conditions that would not change between the two phases from the Candidate City questionnaire to the Applicant City questionnaire. Phase 2 has thus become a logical continuation of Phase 1, rather than a new start.
